Though strong and courageous in bull baiting, these dogs lacked agility for spectacular dog fighting and produced a far less effect on the public than other fighting breeds. The breed was on the brink of extinction in the middle of the 19th century, but thanks to breed fanciers it revived to be used for guarding and companionship.

This breed is known to be the national symbol of Great Britain. The most important characteristics of the breed are: medium size, smooth coat, heavy, thick-set, low-swung body, massive short-faced head, wide shoulders and sturdy limbs. During the old times, these dogs were good working dogs. Along with Rottweilers and other large dogs, these creatures were used as guardians and warriors. This breed has acquired its name due to the cruel sport of bull baiting. When the bloody games of bull bating were popular these dogs were active participants of such shows. They were very strong and able to throw a bull to the ground by rapidly corkscrewing his body right when the big beast was off balance in the middle of a stride.
