Irondog is one of the activities that tests the dog’s ability to protect the owner and determines strength and endurance of the dog. The dog should first pass the Guard Dog Temperament Test (GDT) that consists of two stages. The first stage will test the dog's temperament and ability to obey the commands of the handler. If the dog is loyal to strangers and reacts adequately to various stimuli, it is likely to pass the test. The second stage evaluates protective abilities of the dogs.

Nowadays, health issues are the priority when breeding these dogs. The appearance of these dogs is so exaggerated, that it influences the dog’s health. For instance, a short muzzle causes breathing difficulties and makes the dog sensitive to extreme temperatures. A large head of a puppy makes labor very difficult, often involving cesarean section. If the appearance of the breed would be changed to improve its health, these dogs will likely loose much of their popularity.
