Olde English Bulldog Puppy

Prior to purchasing an Olde English Bulldog puppy, you have to learn everything you can about the breed. The Olde English Bulldogge is a relatively new dog breed. It was created in the 1970s in an attempt to recreate the original English Bulldog’s appearance of the 19th century. Early breeders did not want to recreate aggressiveness and stubborn nature of the original Bulldog, but wanted to eliminate health problems associated with exaggerated appearance of the Bulldog.

An Olde English Bulldog puppy will develop into a muscular medium sized dog with no exaggerated features. It’s very close to the Bulldog developed for bull baiting except for its temperament. The Olde English Bulldogge stands from 16 to 20 inches at the withers and weighs from 50 to 80 pounds. The breed standard is not very strict, because the overall balance is more important in this breed than any measurement taken separately. The same concerns the coat color. It can be black, gray, or brindle with red and white spots. The current breed standard was adopted in 2007. The original standard was developed by the first Olde English Bulldogge breeder David Leavitt.

A purebred Olde English Bulldog puppy can be registered by the NKC, CKC, and OEBKC (Olde English Bulldogge Kennel Club.) The AKC and other major associations don’t recognize the breed. True breed fanciers don’t crave for the AKC recognition, because it may lead to spoiling the characteristics of the breed, as it was with many working breeds. Participating in shows for purebreds is detrimental for the working abilities of the breed, because more and more breeders emphasize the appearance of the purebred dogs, but not their personality and working abilities.

The Olde English Bulldogge is praised for its agility, strength, courage, dignity, intelligence, and friendliness. These dogs are very protective of the family and the house, but accept friendly strangers. Hyperactive Olde English Bulldogges should have a work to do to burn off their energy, keep fit, and give them mental stimulation. This breed needs much exercise in the open. An Olde English Bulldog puppy should not be obtained as an indoor dog.
