Olde English Bulldog
The Olde English Bulldog, Renascence Bulldogge, Continental, Victorian, and Dorset Old Tyme Bulldog are the examples of attempt to recreate the original English Bulldog of the 19th century. When the English Bulldog of today became too exaggerated that its appearance causes a number of health disorders, many breeders turned to the old breed standard and tried to create an endurable, agile, and strong dog that would be able to bait a bull. The main aim of those breeders was to make the breed look more natural and to avoid typical health problems caused by the exaggerated features.
The Olde English Bulldog is the best example of the newly recreated Bulldogs. Though it’s not recognized by the AKC, it’s registered by the NKC and CKC. The official breed standard is developed by the OEBKC (Olde English Bulldogge Kennel Club.) This breed was founded in the 1971 when the first breeder David Leavitt crossed the English Bulldog with the Bullmastiff, Pit Bull, and American Bulldog. It resulted in producing less extreme, but healthier dogs with a longer life span and increased zest for life.
The Olde English Bulldog looks much like the English Bulldog, but the emphasis in breeding is put on its working abilities and health. The size of these dogs varies between 16 and 20 inches at the withers; the weight varies from 50 to 80 pounds. Olde English Bulldogges are muscular, compact, and well balanced, with no extremes. The Olde English Bulldog looks as if it’s ready to bait a bull. The fierce look of these dogs is often misleading. Actually, they are very friendly and affectionate. They make loving pets and companions for the whole family. The Olde English Bulldog combines the looks and health of the Old English Bulldog with the temperament and personality of the modern English Bulldog.
Like all Bulldogs, the Olde English Bulldog is very protective and alert with strangers, but friendly with the family. This breed is excellent as a guard. Very active and full of life, these dogs should not be kept indoors. They need a task to do and regular exercises. Normally, the Olde English Bulldog is intelligent and easy to train.
