Olde English Bulldogs

Olde English Bulldogs originated only about 30 years ago when David Leavitt decided to recreate the original Bulldog developed in the 16th century for controlling and baiting bulls. Old time Bulldogs were very strong, fierce, and courageous animals able to bring down a bull and a bear. To perform in such a blood sport, Bulldogs should be very massive, sure-footed, with a large head and massive shoulders. The main adaptations for bull baiting were the flat muzzle and undershot jaws that provided for the sure grip. A low pain threshold allowed these dogs fight for many hours.

The aim of David Leavitt was to recreate the appearance and health of the old-time bull baiters, but not their fierce temperament. Olde English Bulldogs are friendly, affectionate, and very gentle with the family and friends. Very protective and eager to work, these dogs make excellent guards. Determined, courageous, and very intelligent, these dogs are not for everyone. They need an experienced owner able to socialize and train a strong dog. Females of this breed are more protective, possessive, and territorial than males.

Olde English Bulldogs are much healthier than modern English Bulldogs because their appearance is not exaggerated to extremes and also because their gene pool is more varied than the English Bulldog’s. Actually, the Olde English Bulldog is a mixture of the English Bulldog with the Bullmastiff, American Pit Bull Terrier, and American Bulldog. Crossbreeding with other strong mastiff-type dogs ensures lack of genetic disorders and combines the best features of all four breeds.

The Olde English Bulldog is very hardy and adaptable to a variety of living conditions, but like all other bulldogs, it should be protected from extreme heat and cold. This breed is susceptible to bloat, if allowed to eat much. Hip and elbow dysplasia is a problem of most large and massive dogs. Dogs of this breed are happy with moderate exercise, but they should be walked every day. Their good shape and muscle tone can be maintained with short exercise. Puppies should not be over exercised. Olde English Bulldogs from reputable kennels are generally healthy and easy to train.
